2014 Talks

September 21st, Fresh Wineskins: Communicating the Gospel in Weakness (20.30)

1 Peter 3:13–22, Matthew 10:16-23

Times of persecution, conflict and misunderstanding provided the early Christians the opportunity to share their faith with others. They didn’t speak from a position of power but from a marginal place in society. From them we can relearn a respectful way of listening and dialoguing with those who may not understand Christian spirituality.

September 14th, Fresh Wine Skins: Sent Like Lambs (18.41)

2 Corinthians 2:12-17, Matthew 10:5-15

The practice of evangelism makes many people nervous, both inside and outside the church community. But the New Testament word from which we get evangelism actually means sharing some good news.

September 7th, Fresh Wine Skins: The Church is Sent (24.15)

Romans 10:13–17, Matthew 10:1-7

This is the fourth talk in the wineskins series. As we explore the church’s core values and practices through a close reading of Matthew’s Gospel, we have the opportunity to rediscover the mission nature of the church. We are sent to the world with a message of life.

Two films are mentioned in this talk; the first is THE MISSION, the second is DEAD MAN WALKING. I suggest that both these movies can broaden and spark our understanding of what it means for the church to be sent with the gospel. Clicking on the links above navigate to “Use Good Books” where you’ll find both these DVDs for a good price (and support Oxfam at the same time).

August 17th, Fresh Wine Skins for God’s life giving Activity (28.06)

Revelation 21:1-6, Matthew 9:18-26 (included in audio)

This is the second in a series of talks that explores the church community as the wineskins of God’s activity in the world and asks the question, “How do we go about becoming Wineskins that carry God’s life-giving activity?”  Download Ogg

August 10th, The New Wine of God’s Renewal (19.45)

Matthew 9:14–17

The first in a series of talks exploring how the life of the church can take shape around what God is doing to renew our world. The basis for this exploration is Jesus’ teaching about spiritual practices and community life being like wineskins and the activity of God being like fermenting wine…mmm, sounds delicious so far! This first talk focuses on what God is doing through Jesus and therefore what the church exists for. Download Ogg

Romans 5:1-11, Matthew 7:1-11

I’m going to tell you about one of the most frightening moments in my childhood. It was worse than falling off a horse and breaking my arm. It was worse than being beaten up on the school bus. Download MP3

Jeremiah 31:31-34, Matthew 6:24-34

Jeremiah 31:31-34, Matthew 5:17-20

We can only understand and apply the Sermon on the Mount in relationship to Jesus who fulfills the Old Testament Law and Prophets. Download MP3

January 19th, Jesus the Lamb of God

Isaiah 49:1-7 , John 1:29-42

If we listen to this text carefully, we will hear God speak, we’ll hear Jesus himself extending an invitation to us, to follow him, and discover a deeper, God filled place in which to live our lives. Download MP3

January 5th, God’s Purpose Revealed

Ephesians 1:3-14 , John 1:1-18

Is God hidden or as atheists claim, non-existent? Christmas is a reminder that Jesus reveals God’s nature and purpose. And that’s good news for us, here and now. Download PDF

2013 Talks

November 10th, The Hope of Resurrection (15.08)

Luke 20:27-38
